The Fort Belknap Reservation in northcentral Montana is home to the A'aninin or White Clay People and the Assiniboine Tribes.  The A’aninin were historically known as the Gros Ventre.  There is also a large community of Metis who have intermarried over the years with the people from the reservation.  The Metis are descendants of French trappers and traders who married Cree and Chippewa women.  I lived and worked in Hays for two years in the mid-1970s while I did my dissertation research in cultural anthropology.  Returning to Hays is an emotional experience.  Most of my closest friends have passed.  I remain in touch with their children and grandchildren; some were students of mine in elementary school or in my college classes at the Intertribal Education Center.  The annual Hays Pow Wow takes place in a beautiful meadow in the canyon of the Little Rocky Mountains.  The following photographs were taken at the Pow Wow Pauline and I attended in August 2017.
